HUMAN SCULPTURE is death metal band from Järvenpää, Finland. They just released a mini album named Our World /Torn Down on 5th of August 2011. We got a change to interview the guys and ask how’s the future looking for them!
1.Tell us about your band please?
Human Sculpture was formed in the spring of 2010 in Helsinki, and we have been active since August 2010. We felt the Finnish metal scene, while having a lot of oldschool death&thrash bands, was lacking the more modern kind of music in the death department, so we were aiming to fill the gap.
2.How has your summer gone?
– It’s been good, thanks for asking, although quite busy. In June we were figuring out which studio we should go to for the recording of Our World / Torn Down, and it took a lot of time and hard detective work. We had to think carefully because of the costs of the studio sessions vary so radically, not to mention the quality of the recording. We ended up going to D-Studio in Klaukkala, and so far it seems we made the right choice. After the recording, we’ve been writing more songs and practicing for gigs.
3.What brought you all together in the first place?
– Jussi was hoping to set up a band and found Jaakko’s note in the internet: Jaakko was looking for a band or accomplished musicians to set one up. Jussi, impressed by Jaakko’s background, sent him a song he had made at the time, now called ‘The Feed’. They had a jamming session at Jussi’s old band’s rehearsal place, after which both agreed on starting to look for new members. Jussi put a note up on the net, and just in a couple of days Samu and Ville contacted him about it. They both had really nice experience, and hence we met up at a bar in Helsinki to discuss the band. The meet was successful and we got to work as fast as we could. We found an awesome rehearsal room in Järvenpää through Samu’s contacts and we started to practice the new songs that Jussi had written. After our first gig in Turku, we decided that we needed a second guitarist, and Mikko showed up for wanted in
March 2011.
4.You have just released a “mini” album “Our World / Torn Down”. Can you tell us a bit about it?
– The album was released 5th of August 2011, and it’s been fully listenable on the net for a month before the release. The outcome really surprised us, the sound quality is better than we had hoped, and people seem to love it as much as we do. All feedback so far has been extremely positive, and we already got likes from around the world. Needless to say we are happy with it.
5.Me personally, when I read the name of the album, started to think what it means. Can you tell me, what’s the meaning and the message?
– Basically, the message is about the future of earth and mankind. While we advance in technology and life quality, we also advance in levels of greed and ignorance. Mankind is slowly choking itself on its own greed, and it’s pretty easy to spot today by looking at how whole nations are suffering because of having lived over their wealth. If this direction is kept, we will end up living in the stone age again. While this album is pretty dark lyrically, Human Sculpture is about the future and what we are becoming. There are good things to it too, and we are going to make sure to bring them up, even though we play death metal.
6.I didn’t find any gig history from you guys? Have you done any and if not, why?
– We have had two gigs so far, the first in Turku at Klubi, and the second in Tampere at Varjobaari. The reason we haven’t been out on gigs much yet is us wanting to put out some discography on the internet first which eases a lot getting the gigs, and wanting to provide a great experience to people once they actually get out to see us. We still need a few songs to complete a longer gig set, and we also need to practice to make sure we play the songs together perfectly without thinking about them too much. That’s going to be our next goal after we have promoted this album to the labels and review sites.
7. You are currently unsigned. Is it a choice you’ve made or are you still looking for a suitable company?
– We just released Our World / Torn Down, so the promotion work and looking for a label are just about to start. If someone with the right contract shows up, we will definitely take it.
8.How are you going to promote your album “Our World/Torn Down? Do you have tour booked or something like that?
– The most of the promotion is going on in the internet, on forums, blogs and community sites. A tour would be awesome, but we haven’t really gotten far enough to think seriously about such things yet. We will probably see another mini album release before we get to go on a tour.
9. What inspires you to make music?
– Its a sum of many factors. Biggest of them are definitely good bands and musicians, but we can’t disregard the world we live in, friends, or family either.
10.if you’d make a music video, how would you like it to be and who would you like to direct it?
– That’s a difficult question. We’ve had some chit chat about Jaakko’s brother being into making videos and that he could maybe make a video for us if we wanted to. We would probably write something funny together and get some sick energy going on the tape with it. Tim Fox has some nice work out there, so we would probably accept if he wanted
to do a music video for us.
