Yngwie Malmsteen and Alex Hellid (ENTOMBED) are among the artists being honored at SKAP‘s (Svenska Kompositörer Av Populärmusik, The Swedish Society Of Popular Music Composers) annual ceremony this coming Monday, May 28 at Vinterträdgården, Grand Hôtel in Stockholm.
Every year SKAP awards scholarships and prizes to celebrate Swedish creativity across all musical genres. The awards ceremony takes place in tandem with SKAP‘s annual spring party which is organized with the composers in mind and creativity as the main focus. During the event, there are 13 recipients of a scholarship valued at 40,000 SEK (approximately $5,574) each.
SKAP on Malmsteen: “With his unique way of understanding classical music as well as rock n roll, he has written songs that have made him one of the foreground figures — if not THE foreground figure — for an entire genre. The Swedish Society of Popular Music Composers wish to praise an author whose songwriting skills are often overshadowed by his blazing guitar technique.” Source: Blabbermouth.net
Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson posted the video below from the band’s tour stop in Sioux City, Iowa, where he got a brand-new five-string Kelly Bird bass from Jackson Guitars, with whom he has a signature line of instruments. Watch him give it the official Ellefson bass test – playing the line from “Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying?” of course.
Megadeth‘s U.S. tour winds down tomorrow night with their performance at Rocklahoma 2012 (where they’ll be joined by Rob Zombie, Theory of a Deadman, Black Stone Cherry and Trivium, along with many, many other bands.
Metal Shock Finland‘s Tarja Virmakari has recently conducted an audio interview with Chris Barnes from SIX FEET UNDER, just a couple of days before the release of “Undead” (on may 22 via Metal Blade). He told about the new album and its songs and about the recordings as well as about the upcoming “18 Nights Of Blood” Tour. When asked what are his memories on Ronnie James Dio, Chris said:
‘Oh wow it’s that long already, that’s crazy it seems like yesterday. He went too soon, my favourite memory is probably seeing the Holy Diver tour, just being amazed by his presence on stage and and how solid a vocalist he always was. The last time I saw him was on the Heaven and Hell tour, he was the pinnacle of metal vocalists, a great singer, a great stage man, he was a really nice fellow, such a shame. Having his music there is some kind of immortality, at least for him and all of us, that’s how i think about him.”

Patrick Macias of the “Otaku-Verse-Zero” webshow recently travelled to Tokyo, Japan to interview BABYMETAL, a heavy metal offshoot of the Japanese pop idol group SAKURA GAKUIN that performs a distinctly Japanese mix of schoolgirl J-pop and death metal. You can now watch his report below.
BABYMETAL released a new single, “Like!”, on March 7 via iTunes. A video for the edited version of the song — which combines pop with extreme metal guitars, an occasional growl or two and a tinge of hip hop — can be seen below.
Formed in 2010, BABYMETAL‘s “Doki Doki Morning” song (see video at this location) was included on the album “Sakura Gakuin 2010 message~”. A follow-up track, “Ijime, Dame, Zettai”, was premiered during a SAKURA GAKUIN in July 2011 and was aired again at the Tokyo Idol festival a month later. It quickly created a buzz due to its mix of melodic speed metal, sensational lyrics around the theme of “Ijime” and the band’s performance, which incorporates the “Wall Of Death.”

Audio samples of all 10 songs that will appear on “Dermal Harvest”, the debut album from Swedish death metallers SKINEATER, can be streamed in the YouTube clip below. The CD will be released later this year via Pulverised Records.
SKINEATER last year announced the addition of drummer Matte Modin (DARK FUNERAL, RAISED FIST, DEFLESHED, SPORTLOV) to the group’s ranks.
Formed in late 2008, SKINEATER features scene veterans Håkan Stuvemark (ex-WOMBBATH, ex-IN THY DREAMS), Stefan Westerberg (ex-CARNAL FORGE, ex-IN THY DREAMS) and Jörgen Ström (THE MARY MAJOR).
Regarding the band’s deal with Pulverised, Stuvemark said, “All we’ve heard about [Pulverised] — and through our own experience during negotiating with the label — has been good! We are ready to cause some damage, so keep yer eyes and ears open!”
Added Pulverised Records A&R manager Calvin Chiang: “After we heard about SKINEATER, it was obviously a no-brainer that their brand of crushing death metal fitted the Pulverised roster perfectly. With their downright devastating and ruthless vibe combined with a slight tinge of melodic elements; we knew there was something remarkable about SKINEATER!”

// ENGEL
Recently ENGEL‘s new album, “Blood Of Saints”, has entered the official chart in Sweden at position No. 60. Released on May 18 via Season Of Mist, the CD was recorded at Antfarm studios in Aabyhøj, Denmark. According to the group, the new album “is going to be a good mixture between both [previous ENGEL efforts] ‘Threnody’ [2010] and ‘Absolute Design’ [2007], but with some new angles as well! If you liked ‘Threnody’, you will LOVE ‘Blood Of Saints’!”
Vocalist Corey Taylor and other members of SLIPKNOT visited the grave site of the band’s late bassist, Paul Gray, last night on the two-year anniversary of his death.
“We just hung out and told some good stories,” Taylor tells Revolver. “It felt good to do that. It was the first time we’ve been able to hang out and talk about him without crumbling. It was good. We laughed about the old memories. It meant something. It definitely meant something.”
Gray passed away in May 2010 from an accidental overdose of drugs, leaving behind his wife Brenna and daughter October, who was born the following August.
SLIPKNOT played its first headlining show since the death of Paul Gray on June 21, 2011 at Columbiahalle in Berlin, Germany. Gray‘s red jumpsuit, mask and bass guitar stood at the back of the stage while his bandmates performed. The rest of the group’s members donned red jumpsuits and older versions of their trademark masks from SLIPKNOT‘s earlier days, in tribute to their fallen bandmate.
Playing bass for the band is Donnie Steele, who was the guitarist in an early incarnation of the group. Steele, however, is hidden from the audience’s view.
“Even though Paul‘s not with us, everybody’s right, he would not want us to just stop being what we are,” Taylor tells Revolver. “We headlined the first [Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem run [in 2008], and now we’re coming back and doing it again [this summer], albeit it under different circumstances. But I think it’s going to be great. Plus, I’ll have my family out with me so it’s going to be like summer vacation, only more masks.” Source: Blabbermouth.net
